Awesome Coffee + Fair Trade Movement = Elbow Room Cafe
The Elbow Room has been dishing up 100% fair trade, organic coffee since 2004. We serve fair trade coffee, espresso, tea
and chocolate, fresh baked pastry, vegan goodies and sweets. We are not just another coffee shop selling fair trade coffee:
we are active participants in the fair trade movement. We support our southern partner producers by doing business
ethically, buying only certified fair trade coffees from reputable sources, and supporting organic agricultural practices.
In addition to serving up our tasty fair trade brews, we serve fair trade teas, sugar, and chocolate. In 2006, the Elbow
Room began roasting our own fair trade, organic coffee and we are proud to support Cooperative Coffees, a 100% fair
trade coffee importing cooperative founded by our pal Dean Cycon from Dean's Beans in Orange, Ma. We are pleased to
offer great coffees from Dean's Beans in our shop in addition to our own little roasts. Come by the Cafe and check out
our little sample air roaster in action.
Currently, we only sell coffee out of the Elbow Room. The plan is to have our coffees available for sale online in the
future. We are working toward getting bigger equipment.
Our Work in the Coffee Community, At Home and In the Coffee Lands...
The Elbow Room is a founding partner of the Northampton Fair Trade Coalition, which formed in 2007 to educate
consumers and local businesses about fair trade products and the people who produce them. In 2008, we worked with the
Northampton city government to pass an official ordinance to become the 6th Fair Trade Town in the United States. For
more information on Fair Trade Towns, check out www.mafairtrade.com.
In May 2008 we travelled to Esteli, Nicaragua to meet with producers from an all female fair trade cooperative called La
FEM (Fundacion Entres Mujeres) as part of a Fair Trade Coffee Delegation hosted by Just Coffee. We met with producers
and their families to learn about their land, coffee, production methods, and the trials and tribulations of the fair trade
system. As coffee retailers, the Elbow Room strives to support our southern partners through equitable trade. As global
citizens, we work in solidarity with coffee producers and grassroots organizers to support fair, sustainable trade
relationships.
Elbow Room and the Environment
The Elbow Room is proud to be the first coffee shop in Northampton to invest in a carbon-neutral footprint. In May 2008,
we bought carbon offsets from Terrapass. All of the cafe operations (waste, electricity, heat, and so on) have been offset
by our investments in wind farm and landfill gas recapture projects.
We only sell organic coffees, which means better coffee for you and better and safer farming conditions for our southern
partners and the planet.
Finally, the Elbow Room pays you back for being Earth-savvy. Every time you bring a reusable mug to the Elbow Room,
you earn points toward free drinks and enjoy 50 cent discounts on coffees.
BTW...Starbucks give you about a nickel if you bring a mug. Maybe. And the coffee costs a fortune. And it's not fair
trade. And it's not organic. And it's no fun to drink.
